LV Sun: Democrats take aim at proposed cuts to mental health programs

March 29, 2011 – Democrats are taking aim at Gov. Brian Sandoval’s proposed budget that cuts mental health spending by 14 percent and eliminates or reduces such things as counseling, housing and treatment.

“This is foolishness,” said Sen. Sheila Leslie, D-Reno. These programs, she said, keep those with mental health problems out of jail or from being restrained in a more secure and costly mental health institution.

A joint Senate-Assembly budget subcommittee zeroed in today on the proposal by the governor. Lawmakers didn't make any decisions, but Democrats showed preference for re-instating some of the cuts.

Assemblywoman April Mastroluca, D-Las Vegas, said this was a case of early intervention of patients to avoid possible prison terms or more expensive treatment down the line.

RJ: Bill banning cell phone use, texting while driving advances

March 29, 2011  -- People who get caught text messaging or talking on a cell phone while driving would be guilty of a misdemeanor under a bill approved Tuesday by a legislative committee.

The Assembly Committee on Transportation voted 12-3 in favor of Assembly Bill 151, which seeks to prohibit people from using cell phones while behind the wheel, although they would be able to talk on a mobile phone if they used a hands-free device.

The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Kelvin Atkinson, D-North Las Vegas, would impose a $50 fine for the first offense, $100 for the second offense and $250 for the third offense

New highway exchange opens in Henderson

I was happy to join a number of Henderson officials and representatives from the transportation department at the opening of the new Galleria Mall ramp in Henderson located in Assembly District 29.
