WALLA WALLA—State Representative Laura Grant has formally announced her intent to retain the seat she was appointed to early in the just-completed legislative session. Grant, a lifelong farmer and public school teacher who returned home from Olympia almost every week during the session to attend community events and spend time with her family, said she wanted to wait until the session was complete before announcing her intent to campaign for the fall election.

“I felt that it was important to make my announcement here at home instead of from Olympia,” said Grant, who returns to the class room on Wednesday to finish the school year. “I was motivated to seek the appointment not for a love of politics but for a desire to serve my neighbors, my community, and the hard working families of south east Washington. I am looking forward to the months ahead.”

Grant was appointed by a bi-partisan majority of county commissions from Franklin, Benton, Walla Walla and Columbia Counties following the death of her father, longtime state House leader Bill Grant, at the outset of session. Laura Grant, who until a few years ago worked alongside her father on the family’s century old wheat farm was proud to serve in his legacy, but eager to forge her own way as well.

“I brought to Olympia my father’s independent streak and love for the land, and my own experience as a mom and teacher,” said Grant, who serves as Vice Chair of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. “I’m proud of my votes against taxes and fees, and for small business and family farms. Despite deep budget cuts I fought to make sure we made needed reforms to help local schools, invest in job training and vocational programs, and continue regional transportation and highway safety improvements.”

Grant will begin campaigning immediately for the August Top 2 primary, although school will take precedent until early June.

“I’ve missed my students, their families, and my colleagues and cannot wait to get back in the classroom,” said Grant, who teaches fifth grade at Berney Elementary School in Walla Walla. “I’m going to have a busy and challenging summer and fall leading up the election, but my first priorities are to spend time with my family, finish the school year and continue serving my constituents. It’s been an honor to serve in Olympia and I look forward to continuing in public service.”
